Brilliant use of roof top space in Beijing and Hong Kong. Urban farming on roof tops is not a new thing anymore, but the enthusiasm of these two is infectious.

I paid a visit to the Potager Du Roi (King’s Vegetable Garden) in Versailles when I was staying near Paris last week. The garden has obviously far fewer gardeners in residence than it would have done in the time of the Sun King, Louis XIV, and is seemingly run to organic standards, so is a little ragged around the edges. Now it is the home of the Ecole Superiere Du Paysage, and largely a teaching garden. The hundreds of fruit trees (some really ancient) that account for a large proportion of the garden are preserved and well cared for. There are no less than 42 different forms of fruit training on display, although i’m pretty sure i didn’t spot half of them. I was amazed to see an apple tree trained into a spiral, but after checking out the fantastic ‘Encyclopedie des formes fruitieres’, this would evidently have been mere child’s play to a French gardener of the 17th century.

Illegal Front Yard Garden: Canadian Couple’s Kitchen Garden Targeted By Authorities
Boing Boing points us to a petition to save the garden, which authorities insist must be removed. The town code states that a vegetable garden can take up 30 percent of a front yard at most, and Landry and Beauchamp’s is in violation. They were given two weeks to comply, which means the garden must be drastically scaled back by this Sunday.
I thought Canada was cool!?

Monty Don visit’s an Organoponico and a garden in the remains of a collapsed building in BBC series 80 Gardens Around The World.

THIS IS WHAT I WANT TO DO WITH SOCIAL WORK, FERDANGIT. THIS IS SOCIAL WORK. FERDANGIT.
Strolling the internuts, I ran across a post by fellow garden enthusiast Trubadeur about a crew of visionaries called Inner City Farms straight outta Vancouver. They’ve taken it upon themselves to righteously rip up lawns and replant them with tiny farms for their CSA. Grass is for zeros. Crops are for.. heroes? Ugh.
In Brooklyn we grow on the roofs of our garbage can containers, so a lush half acre seems like an obvious opportunity. With all that direct sun? C’mon. I like the cut of their jibs. Have a look at their Flickr for more of these lovely images.
why limit the movement to annuals? LET’S GET SOME PERENNIAL FOOD FORESTS UP IN THIS BITCH. NO TILL, BABY

The wonderful Harry Dodson and Peter Thoady in the classic Victorian Kitchen Garden series. Hypnotically boring/fascinating to watch, depending on your point of view. I personally LOVE it.
